Not every lactoferrin supplement is made the same way. Source, purity, processing, and formulation all influence what ends up in the finished product. Two things are worth paying closest attention to: iron and ferritin optimization, and gut barrier function. Those are the two areas where the research on lactoferrin is strongest.
What Is Lactoferrin?
Let's start with the basics. Colostrum, the first milk any mammal produces, works like nature's starter kit. It lays the groundwork for a strong gut lining, gets iron regulation up and running, and gives the immune system its earliest lessons (Jańczuk et al., 2023). Looking closer, the protein doing most of that heavy lifting is lactoferrin — especially in human colostrum.
The thing is, most lactoferrin and colostrum supplements on shelves today come from cows, but cow colostrum was built to raise baby calves, not humans. It carries only a fraction of the lactoferrin found in human colostrum, so even a generous serving of a bovine product gives you a small amount of the one protein you're after, in a form your body doesn't fully recognize as its own (Jańczuk et al., 2023). And that's before you consider that it's taking colostrum away from the calf it was meant for in the first place.
effera® Lactoferrin vs. A Bovine Lactoferrin Supplement
Instead of bovine lactoferrin, Palisade uses bioidentical human effera® lactoferrin. Here's the question everyone asks first: If it's "human-equivalent," does that mean it comes from humans? It doesn't. Rather, effera® is made through precision fermentation, a process that teaches yeast cells to produce lactoferrin with the exact same amino acid sequence as the lactoferrin your body already makes. No person, and no cow, is involved.
The finished bioidentical lactoferrin we use is gluten-free and contains no yeast. This fermentation process is the same one used to produce medications like insulin, bioidentical hormone therapy, and GLP-1 drugs,
Because your body reads effera® as its own protein rather than a foreign one, it doesn't trigger the immune response a cow protein can.* It's also more resistant to breaking down on the way through, so more of it arrives where it's meant to work.* In a published case series, two active women with persistently low iron took effera® at 100mg per day, the same dose in a Palisade serving, for 6 to 20 weeks. Both saw ferritin rise. One also saw marked increases in serum iron and transferrin saturation. Neither reported gastrointestinal issues (Clark, 2026).* It's a case series, not a randomized trial, and two people is two people. And there's the concentration gap: 15x more lactoferrin than bovine colostrum, in a form your body reads as its own.
AstraGin® For Gut Wall And Nutrient Absorption Support
AstraGin® is a patented, plant-based compound made from saponins of two plants: Astragalus membranaceus, known as Huang Qi, and Panax notoginseng, a Chinese ginseng. These herbs have been commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of eyars. AstraGin® works alongside lactoferrin as an absorption multiplier, supporting the nutrient transporters in the gut wall and helping the gut lining stay healthy.* It has been shown in clinical studies to support improved absorption of key nutrients through the gut wall.*
Bacillus Coagulans Unique IS-2® For The Layer Behind The Barrier
The third active is a probiotic strain, and it's the most clinically studied Bacillus coagulans in the world: 10 completed adult human trials across IBS, regularity, women's health, immunity, and protein absorption. It's spore-forming, which means it survives stomach acid and reaches the gut intact without refrigeration, and it's stable enough to work in a gummy.
Lactoferrin and AstraGin® support the gut wall. Unique IS-2® supports what lives behind it. At 2 billion CFU per serving, the dose used in the published IBS and regularity trials.*
Dose-Matched, Cruelty-Free, and Independently Tested
Clinical evidence only matters if the amount in your gummy matches the amount used in the research. Every active in Palisade's formula is dosed to the levels used in its supporting studies, not just included at a token amount to justify a label claim. We don’t believe it’s necessary or ethical to harvest bovine colostrum from cows producing it for their newborns. Our gummies are cruelty-free, dairy-free, and vegan. Each batch is also verified by independent labs for purity, potency, and contaminants, with certificates of analysis available on request.
Worth setting expectations before you buy: two gummies a day, any time of day, and give it 90 days. Iron stores rebuild slowly regardless of what you take, and the people who see the least from this are the ones who stop at week three. It’s worth committing to your routine and sticking with it!
Lactoferrin Capsules vs. Lactoferrin Powder vs. Lactoferrin Gummies
The choice between lactoferrin capsules, lactoferrin powder, and gummies often comes down to how you prefer to take supplements, though the format also says something about the source.
Choosing Your Preferred Format
Capsules are familiar and require no prep, which is why most bovine lactoferrin ends up there. Powder appeals to people who like mixing supplements into food, though it means measuring, and the taste is a real factor with a protein like this. Gummies need no measuring, no mixing, and no negotiating with yourself at 7 AM. Ours are gluten-free, low-sugar, vegan, and blackberry. However, before choosing any format, check the serving information and ingredients so you can compare products based on more than just convenience. Potency, source, and supporting ingredients can vary significantly between formats.
Why Bovine Lactoferrin Can't Be Made Into Gummies
Here's something worth knowing if you've noticed that lactoferrin gummies are harder to find than lactoferrin capsules. Bovine lactoferrin is a heat-sensitive protein that tends to break down during the cooking process gummies require, which is part of why most bovine lactoferrin products come as capsules or powders instead. effera®'s fermentation-based production is what allows it to hold up through gummy manufacturing, which is part of why Palisade can offer this specific ingredient in gummy form in the first place.
Where To Buy Lactoferrin
Researching where to buy lactoferrin means considering more than availability or price. Review the source of the lactoferrin, ingredient transparency, serving information, and supplement format before making a purchase. After all, products that include supporting ingredients for absorption or gut health may offer more complete support than a single-ingredient formula.
